President’s Report AGM 2023

2023 agm jindabyne chamber presidents report

‘The 2022-23 period has been an incredible year for the Chamber and local businesses. Following the post-boom of Winter 2022, the softer Winter of 2023 impacted the majority of businesses. The same issues continue to compound the visitor experience, with seasonal housing being at the top of the list, and this will likely remain a challenge for the foreseeable future.

We are also witnessing a generational change in business ownership, as businesses are being placed on the market at a rate unprecedented in my experience. Simultaneously, a range of new micro businesses is emerging in town. This surge is supported by Covid relocations and a strong base of tourism opportunities.

Membership remains strong and continues to strengthen, allowing us to maintain our paid promotions. Our success lies in our membership tier, our subscription model, and the excellent work of our talented Promotions team, Fiona and Kerin.

The SAP has been a major focus of the Chamber for the past five years and will continue to be so. However, our ambitions will need to be tempered, as the current government’s focus differs from that of the previous government, which was centred on transformative projects.

Among our successes are the increased membership, enhanced marketing, and promotion of the town, culminating in our being finalists in the small tourism town awards. And, of course, the return of the Chamber-organised signature event – The Snow Ball.

Being part of the Chamber is fundamentally about service to the community, and although it often goes unrecognised, we don’t do it for recognition. Participation is about the belief that we can improve opportunities for businesses and the community alike. For me, it’s about the friendships and good times shared in pursuit of that belief. In this regard, I extend many thanks to Gary Grant and Eddy Griffin for all the ‘dialling in’ you’ve done, allowing us to tap into your vast and differing perspectives and experiences. To Kerin Jarvis and Fiona Latham-Cannon: I’ve never worked alongside such devoted and passionate people. Your dedication, the hours you put in, and the laughter and good times are a personal inspiration.

I look forward to more of the same. Working on our nighttime economy project will be key, as will the Snow Ball 2024.

So, if you’re considering putting your hand up to participate in the committee, thank you very much. Don’t hesitate—I’m sure you’ll enjoy the experience.’

Fast Fashion And Slow Fashion – What’s The Difference?

Fast Fashion And Slow Fashion - What's The Difference?

So we’ve heard that fast fashion is bad, but why? … and why is slow fashion the answer?

Fast Fashion And Slow Fashion - What's The Difference?

‘Fast Fashion’ is a term used to summarise the fast production processes adopted by many big fashion franchises.

Big name fast fashion retailers aim to develop, manufacture and deliver new product to market in the shortest time possible.

They typically have to make big compromises on quality, design, sustainability and ethics in order to meet these quick delivery timeframes.

Fast Fashion Brands – Meaning :  A brand that emphasises making fashion quickly and cheaply available to their market. Commonly, a brand that values speed & efficiency over sustainability & ethical considerations.

Some of the most popular fast fashion brands have been known to mimic or reproduce other designer’s original designs, under-pay workers and take questionable shortcuts on their garment construction and overall quality.

The prevalence of fast fashion retailers has had devastating effects environmentally. Poorly made garments are often ill-fitting & uncomfortable. Low quality garments don’t last as long due their quick, overly-simplified construction.

This means that the world is being constantly inundated with new, low quality garments every week and the wearer is quickly tossing them aside. It’s a huge problem, and it’s stacking up.

For many fast fashion brands, sustainability is simply an inconvenience and a threat to their global marketing plans.

Many have attempted to divert attention away from their environmental short-comings with a ‘considered’ collection or similar… a little bit of organic cotton or natural linen fibre to throw their customer off the scent.

It’s a token act, while their mainlines are still manufactured in a nameless overseas factory by workers in potentially abhorrent conditions!

The alternatives for fast fashion over-consumption are thankfully abundant right now.

There is an anti fast fashion movement swelling. This movement is protesting against fast fashion and its pursuit of dollars over sustainability and ethics.

‘Slow Fashion’ – Meaning : An emphasis on quality, environmental sustainability, ethics, timelessness and the uniqueness of the design.

In slow fashion, sustainability, ethics and fair trade is paramount.

Slow fashion, by definition, is about slowing down the design and production processes to achieve a better end result for everyone.

UP COMING SEASON 22/23 by Murray Ogilvie

Murray Ogilvie

With the Trout season about to open, now is the time to go through your gear and get ready for another great season ahead.

The Rivers and Streams are looking fantastic and we will have plenty of water to get us into Summer.

The shop is stocked up with all the latest gear with the latest rods from Sage, Primal, Vision and Scott. We have a very large range of Waders and Boots from Simms, Vision and Patagonia to fit all shapes.

Our Fly selection is huge and stocked with heavy nymphs for the high flows at the start of the season. Jig flies are very popular as they sink quickly and fish upside down so less likely to get hooked up on the bottom.

The Lakes are fishing very well and shouldn’t be forgotten once the rivers open. There are great conditioned fish cruising the edges and big wets stripped fast have produced some beautiful fish.

We are open 7 days and there is new gear being added the the website everyday so call in and get the best advice for you to enjoy the coming season.

Cheers from the team and see you soon.
